International Release of
A DOLLAR & A DREAM
A Short Documentary Film

by award-winning documentary filmmaker
Meghan Horvath

In January 2009, the first African-American President of the United States took office.
One man helped put him there, without casting a vote.
This is his journey…

A Dollar & A Dream follows the compelling story of British political activist Malcolm Clark as he travels to Cincinnati, Ohio to campaign door-to-door for Obama; before joining the throngs in Chicago’s streets on election night. Along the way he meets a broad range of American voters: from deeply suspicious Republicans (a portent of the Tea-Party movement), to those on the Left already fearing an Obama presidency wouldn’t live up to its promise.

A Dollar & A Dream captures the electrifying atmosphere of that final week of the election, examining what life was like as a foot-soldier on the Obama campaign trail and looking at what motivated people from across the world to take an active part.

Meghan Horvath comments:

“I wanted to release this film online now because I think some of the questions it raises – about political campaigning, global democracy, the promise of social change and the power of the individual – are as relevant as they were two years ago. And I think what makes this film timely is to see whether the excitement about a new era in American politics still resonates with Americans and people around the world today.”

Malcolm Clark adds:

A Dollar & A Dream conveys the reality of my experience on the campaign trail: not just the high points of rallies and winning moments, but the mundane challenges experienced by ordinary citizens knocking on doors for a cause they believe in, and the encounters with critics as well as like-minded activists.  In seeing me don Halloween costume and go ‘Trick or Vote’ canvassing, I hope that audiences are reminded that campaigning should be a visible, accessible and fun activity.”
